The Hummingbird Project Activity Specialists: Delivering A New Kind of Dementia Care
What is an Activity Specialist?
At The Hummingbird Project, our mission is to enhance the quality of life for older adults through personalized engagement that fosters joy, creativity, and meaningful connections. Our Activity Specialists are central to this mission.
Who Are Activity Specialists and Who They Are Not
Activity Specialists at The Hummingbird Project are trained professionals who design and deliver customized activities tailored to older adults’ unique needs, interests, and abilities. They go beyond simply facilitating activities; they act as creative partners, compassionate companions, and skilled advocates for the well-being of those they serve.
Activity specialists are not care providers; it is not appropriate to substitute an Activity Specialist for a care provider. Activity Specialists are also not Geriatric Care Managers; they do not oversee medical care or manage care needs.
Offering a Diverse Range of Training
Our specialists come from diverse professional backgrounds. Specialists include creative arts therapists, recreation therapists, teaching artists, and activity professionals. Most of our team members have advanced degrees and clinical licenses and are certified professionals in various disciplines.
The range and diversity of our team are intentional because each client is unique. Our specialists draw on various skills and experiences to create enriching experiences tailored to each client.

A Holistic Approach
Inspired by Nina Herndon’s holistic quality of life philosophy, The Hummingbird Project is guided by seven domains of wellness. Learn more about these principles here.
What Do Activity Specialists Do?
1. Personalized Activity Planning
We begin by getting to know each individual’s interests, joys, and life story. This understanding forms the foundation of a personalized activity care plan tailored to their cognitive and physical abilities and tapping into their passions.
2. Cognitive Enrichment
Keeping active and engaged is crucial, regardless of physical or cognitive challenges. Our specialists use puzzles, memory games, art, music, and other cognitive exercises to stimulate their minds and help mental acuity.

3. Emotional Support and Connection
Loneliness and isolation are common among older adults, particularly those with chronic conditions or mobility issues. Our specialists build meaningful relationships with clients, offering companionship and emotional support to alleviate loneliness. The result: a greater sense of connection.

4. Creative and Artistic Expression
Through activities such as painting, crafting, music, or storytelling, we help our clients explore their creativity, providing a therapeutic outlet for self-expression. Creative expression is a powerful tool for self-discovery and emotional release.
5. Physical Activity and Movement
Physical activity is vital for health and well-being. Activity Specialists design movement-based activities, such as gentle stretching, chair yoga, or dance, adapted to each client’s mobility level.
6. Life Review and Legacy Project Work
Reflecting on life’s journey can be deeply rewarding. We engage clients in journaling, creating memory books, or recording oral histories, helping them to celebrate their life stories and leave a legacy.
7. Sensory Stimulation
For clients with advanced dementia or other cognitive impairments, our specialists use multisensory activities, such as tactile objects, aromatherapy, and soothing sounds, to evoke positive emotional responses.
