Flights of Imagination Art Show: A Celebration of Creative Expression
This month, we showcase artwork from The Hummingbird Project’s recent Flights of Imagination Exhibition. The exhibit, held at the Burlingame Public Library from October 22nd to December 5th, features the work of 30 Hummingbird Project clients.
The exhibit’s name is fitting. The Flights of Imagination Exhibition celebrates and elevates the boundless creativity of older adults as they navigate life transitions, memory loss, and disability. Within this gallery, you’ll discover artwork created in partnership with The Hummingbird Project’s Engagement Specialists—each piece a testament to self-expression, imagination, and the human spirit.
Before you explore, a bit of background:
Background of the Exhibition
It started with Hummingbird Quality of Life Engagement Specialist Keesje Fischer, a visual artist with a BFA in painting. In 2022, Keesje helped organize a solo exhibition at Burlingame Library, featuring the artwork of Artist, Hummingbird client, and Burlingame native, Roger Simpson. This blog showcased the premiere exhibit.
This year, The Hummingbird Project, with Keesje and Engagement Specialist/Art Therapist, Jayne Ferrari serving as curators, decided to expand the scope of another exhibition at the Burlington Library to include Hummingbird clients across its service regions. The main goal was to create a platform for our clients to share their creative expression in a public forum.
As a practice dedicated to enhancing our clients’ quality of life, we recognize the profound and transformative power of creative expression. As one of our seven domains of wellness, creative expression remains one of the most impactful ways to engage older adults—including those experiencing physical limitations or cognitive decline. Every day, Hummingbird Engagement Specialists and Sage Personal Care Assistants nurture creativity by inviting clients to explore painting, coloring, collage-making, and a wide variety of other expressive art forms. Through these moments, connection, confidence, and joy take flight.
The Exhibition
Participation in the Flights of Imagination Exhibition exceeded expectations. Thirty artists from six of the regions served by The Hummingbird Project are featured, with 41 pieces in total. The gallery is intended to provide an online exhibition. Here, you can stroll through the art exhibit virtually, and when you select each artwork, we invite you to
- Reflect the creative process that each artist brings.
- Consider the story behind each piece of artwork.
- Imagine someone in your own life discovering that same sense of accomplishment and delight.
Artist Quotes
In the words of three of the participating artists:
When I make art, I’m free as a bird.
What I like about art, there are no rules. With art, you make the rules.
Larry, The Hummingbird Project client
It’s good to bring this kind of work to your clients like me. It’s therapeutic.
It feels good to work with your hands.
Christina, The Hummingbird Project client
Beauty is everywhere. You just have to find it.
And creative expression “is Everything!
