A Journey of Care: My Path to Becoming a Personal Care Attendant
Throughout my career, I have worked with hundreds of caregivers. I am constantly in awe of their commitment to each client, their endless creativity, and how they go above and beyond to support their client’s physical, emotional, and spiritual needs. The Personal Care Attendants (PCAs) at Sage Eldercare Solutions stand out.
Sage PCAs are committed to enhancing each client’s quality of life. In collaboration with the team at The Hummingbird Project, a personalized home care plan is designed to address the person’s needs. Each home care client at Sage receives complimentary access to our home care quality of life program, which includes enhanced activity training and support for each PCA, along with free access to our virtual day program hosted by Activity Specialists from The Hummingbird Project. As you will read below, quality-of-life-enhancing activities not only bring joy to our clients but also to our PCAs.
This month, we highlight Lily’s path to becoming a PCA at Sage. We are so proud to have PCAs like Lily on our team!
PCA Spotlight: Lily Mills
In November 2012, I made a significant move from Oregon, where I worked with the County, to start anew. Through family connections, I secured a job as a PCA, despite having no prior experience. Thanks to extensive coaching and mentorship, I quickly found my footing in this rewarding field.
By September 2015, I began working with Sage Home Care, marking the start of what has now been a nine-year career. Initially uncertain about my career path, I took on a fill-in job and immediately fell in love with the work. I discovered a deep passion for caregiving, particularly in an agency setting, which allowed me to experience various aspects of home care, including hospice care and managing difficult behaviors creatively.
My Favorite Parts of Being a Live-in Personal Care Attendant
One aspect of being a live-in PCA that I particularly enjoy is the ability to immerse myself fully in the client’s life and needs. This role reduces the need for frequent driving and enables me to build stronger, more meaningful connections with those I care for. It’s not just about earning a living; it’s about finding satisfaction in what I do and truly enjoying helping others. This intrinsic motivation keeps me going.
Building trust and rapport with clients is crucial in this line of work. I approach my clients as partners, getting to know every detail about their lives. Customized care is essential because there is no one-size-fits-all solution in personal care. Flexibility, patience, empathy, and effective communication are key skills that every PCA should possess.
The Impact of My Work
The impact of my work on my clients’ lives is profound. Developing a deep connection with them, understanding their habits, and adhering to their care plans are vital components of my job. Seeing them thrive as a result of my care is incredibly rewarding. By giving my best, I uplift them and meet their needs, which is the most fulfilling aspect of being a PCA.
One unique approach I bring to my care is thorough preparation. I ensure I learn as much as possible about a client before stepping into their home. If one approach doesn’t work, I persist until I find a method that does. This adaptability and commitment to quality care set me apart.
Looking ahead, my goal is to perfect my caregiving skills and be the best possible attendant for my clients. I aim to continue learning new techniques, especially in dementia care, and to apply the transferable skills I’ve gained from parenting to my professional life. I value the collaborative environment at Sage, where fellow PCAs willingly share their knowledge and techniques, fostering a non-judgmental atmosphere of mutual learning and support.
More About Me
In my personal life, I enjoy traveling, with my favorite destinations including Paris, Venice, and various National Parks. I hike, cook, engage in DIY projects, and explore new foods and places. These hobbies enrich my life and keep me enthusiastic about trying new activities with my clients, from cooking and puzzles to music and virtual travel experiences.

I feel incredibly fortunate for the opportunities Sage has provided me. The agency’s knowledgeable and supportive staff and 24/7 emergency support make it a standout place to work. My Sage managers provide the support that’s crucial for caregivers; it is always easy to communicate with them, and their advocacy for work-related and personal matters is truly valued. I always recommend Sage to others. The positive impact of Sage on my professional and personal growth serves as compelling testimony.
