Embracing Purpose and Joy: Why I Work for The Hummingbird Project
In a world where aging often comes with challenges such as isolation and loneliness, organizations like The Hummingbird Project stand out for their commitment to enhancing the quality of life of older adults. As co-founder of The Hummingbird Project, I am passionate about making a positive impact in the lives of others every single day—both the lives of our clients and our team, who works diligently every day to support and uplift other’s lives. In this blog post, I will explore the unique aspects of The Hummingbird Project and why I believe it is a deeply fulfilling organization to be a part of.
What is The Hummingbird Project?
The Hummingbird Project is a compassionate organization that offers one-on-one activity and engagement services tailored to the individual needs of older adult clients and their families. We are humanistic, mindful, and earnest. By pairing clients with professionally trained therapeutic Activity Specialists, the project aims to reduce isolation, combat loneliness, and create opportunities for joy through customized activity plans.
The Role of Therapeutic Activity Specialists
The role therapeutic activity specialists play is unique. These professionals are trained to help older adults feel more purposeful and content by re-engaging in old passions and exploring new interests. The diverse backgrounds of these specialists include creative arts and creative arts therapy, recreation therapy, and gerontology. Activity Specialists are not care managers, and they are not personal care assistants. They are engagement and enrichment specialists who create joyful opportunities for each unique client they serve. The role is so incredibly unique, which makes it a joy to manage.

Flexibility in Service Delivery
The Hummingbird Project recognizes the diverse needs of its clients and offers flexibility in service delivery. Whether through in-person activity sessions in specific regions like the San Francisco Bay Area, Sacramento, Los Angeles County, and Seattle or virtual sessions accessible from anywhere, the organization strives to make its services widely available. Because our services are flexible, so are our team members’ schedules. We understand that team members may have various personal and professional interests, and we support and promote life-work balance. (That’s right—life comes first ☺).
Benefits for Older Adults, Including People Living with Dementia
The Hummingbird Project firmly believes in the therapeutic benefits of engagement and joy. Our holistic quality of life paradigm follows seven domains of wellness. Positive social interactions, fun and enjoyment of life, validation of feelings, and increased engagement time are just a few of the many benefits that contribute to the well-being of individuals facing memory loss.

Benefits for Our Team
Because we create holistic quality of life for our clients, we strive to create a holistic culture for our team. This includes a competitive benefits package for full-time employees, comprehensive medical, dental, and vision plans, HSA and FSA plans, 401K, paid time off, annual bonus incentives, an employee referral program, continuing education, and more. Our team meetings feature special guest speakers, time for reflection on this amazing work, opportunities to celebrate each other, and more. Our time together in supervision is strengths-based and embodies our core value of continuously learning and growing.

Part of a Larger Vision
The Hummingbird Project is brought to you by Sage Eldercare Solutions (Sage), demonstrating a commitment to a larger vision of holistic eldercare. Sage is deeply committed to enhancing the quality of life of older adults with comprehensive eldercare services that include geriatric care management, in-home care, dementia expertise, and therapeutic activity sessions.
