Honoring Labor Day
Labor Day honors the contributions that workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of America. A past career may be an important part of your care partner’s life story and identity, and honoring that career can give them a sense of pride and feeling of purpose.
Here are ideas on how to spend quality time in a way that celebrates them and their career.
Work Related Photo Album
Make a work related photo album or pick a shelf and fill it with objects commemorating their work. Talk about each photo or item, what it signifies and why it is important.
Work Related Outing
If possible, take your care partner to visit a place like one where they worked, or find articles online or in newspaper about their field of work to share with them. Perhaps they worked in a restaurant and visiting a similar restaurant would be a special way to celebrate their experience.
Celebrating Homemakers
For homemakers, acknowledge their hard work and that raising children and making meals is a very important job. Talk about their favorite parts of their role in the home and then engage them in that task. If cooking was an area of pride, find recipes create a recipe book and make their favorite dish!
Invite participation by asking open-ended questions and reflecting on favorite stories and family history.
