Calling All Birds!
/in News /by Katie GiampaMartin, an avid bird watcher, is feeling frustrated while the Stay at Home orders are in place. Perusing the nearby parks with binoculars was Martin’s favorite choice of activity. With the assistance of his care provider, an Activity Specialist delivered pinecones, peanut butter, and birdseed to create an attractive bird feeder. Hanging it by his living room window, Martin is now reunited with his passion and keeps a journal of his colorful friends who come to visit!

That is My Alma Mater!
/in News /by Katie GiampaMoving to another state is common for older adults. Lucille now lives in California with ties to the east coast. After researching her history, an Activity Specialist found the college and prep school she attended as a young adult. Watching her beam with pride while virtually viewing photos of her alma mater supported the notion that celebrating one’s foundation is important! Rah, Rah, Sis Boom Bah!

Virtual Safari
/in News /by Katie GiampaBeing shut in during Stay at Home orders can be frustrating; especially for clients who are used to going out with their Activity Specialist. A client who is familiar with the owners of Safari West, a wildlife sanctuary, was surprised when her activity specialist shared virtual editions they produced during the pandemic. Imagine the thrill as she viewed her pal narrate on-location surrounded by the beautiful animals. “It’s like we are right there with him!”

Blending Lifelong Learning and Nature
/in News /by Katie GiampaSocial distancing and sheltering in place can be a set up for mental lethargy, a dangerous state for those living with cognitive decline. In a video call, an Activity Specialist a live Bald Eagle webcam while Ben, her scientist client, made observations about the birds’ nest, their movements, appearance, and the parent’s method of feeding the babies. As they discovered interesting facts through this window to the outside world, intellectual and social stimulation nurtured mental activity that was good for the brain. Interesting and fun!
Encouraging Clients to Take the Lead!
/in News /by Katie GiampaOlder adults sometimes experience the feeling of being shut out of conversations; as if they have nothing to contribute upon reaching a certain age. Allowing clients to share their knowledge within an activity session is key to feeling productive and maintaining self-confidence. Aditi, originally from India, assumed a teacher’s role in a virtual activity session as she shared traditions such as the Saree, a garment worn by Indian women. Contributing is making a deposit in the self-worth bank!
