Spiritual Flexibility!
/in News /by Katie GiampaAs social distancing continues, older adults used to practicing their faith rituals each Sunday feel troubled, which can lead to anxiety. An Activity Specialist with the Hummingbird Project worked with the assisted-living facility where Tony lives to allow him to join services virtually with his congregation. Looking forward to seeing familiar people who share his beliefs make him “Feel like my old self again!”

Maintaining Who We Are!
/in News /by Katie GiampaUnfortunately, sometimes society believes that just because people are older, they are not who or what they used to be. Activity Specialists at The Hummingbird Project know that is the farthest thing from the truth; bringing an older adult’s accomplishments to the surface is vital in maintaining who they are. Upon conversing about Lois’s modeling career, she enthusiastically showed her care provider skills she learned when walking the runway. Nothing has changed…she still has the moves and self-esteem!

“Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.” – Thomas Merton
/in News /by Katie GiampaCliff has experienced depression most of his adult life; sometimes he will engage verbally, however, most times he stays to himself. Never being exposed to a creative release, an Activity Specialist provided materials sent to his house and invited him to paint with her virtually. Since then, this outlet has allowed him to engage artistically without feeling responsible for making conversation. Smiling at the end of the session is becoming commonplace for Cliff!

Respect for the Aged Day: September 21st!
/in News /by Katie GiampaSakiya lives with a wonderful care provider, however, due to social distancing, her time with children and grandchildren is limited. Working with her daughter, our Activity Specialist planned a special “Respect for the Aged Day,” a holiday celebrated in Japan to celebrate older adults. Enjoying a special meal in the backyard of her home, Sakiya was given a Cherry Blossom plant (the meaning of her name) by her family. Giving back to those who have contributed with respect and honor!

Bringing Scenic Drives Back!
/in News /by Katie GiampaFor many older adults, long periods of social distancing is frustrating. Teaming up with Lois’s care provider, an Activity Specialist planned an outing to Venice beach while exercising the latest precautions by the CDC. Both client and care provider enjoyed a packed lunch, the beach, and the redwood trees without ever leaving the car! Scenic drives…taking it back to the good old days!
