With a limited sense of community and connection, engaging in art observation can help fight loneliness and boredom for elders. One client became particularly talkative when asked to describe a painting shared by Zoom, asking questions about the artist and describing the painting as “feeling optimistic”. As emotional and creative life quality were supported, our client found her smile and responded to the floral painting saying, “Oh boy, that’s nice.”

Blending Lifelong Learning and Nature
/in News /by Katie GiampaSocial distancing and sheltering in place can be a set up for mental lethargy, a dangerous state for those living with cognitive decline. In a video call, an Activity Specialist a live Bald Eagle webcam while Ben, her scientist client, made observations about the birds’ nest, their movements, appearance, and the parent’s method of feeding the babies. As they discovered interesting facts through this window to the outside world, intellectual and social stimulation nurtured mental activity that was good for the brain. Interesting and fun!
Encouraging Clients to Take the Lead!
/in News /by Katie GiampaOlder adults sometimes experience the feeling of being shut out of conversations; as if they have nothing to contribute upon reaching a certain age. Allowing clients to share their knowledge within an activity session is key to feeling productive and maintaining self-confidence. Aditi, originally from India, assumed a teacher’s role in a virtual activity session as she shared traditions such as the Saree, a garment worn by Indian women. Contributing is making a deposit in the self-worth bank!

Ahh…Teamwork!

A Hoarder’s Helper!
/in News /by Katie GiampaDue to recent Stay at Home orders, clients who once obtained in-person assistance with specific issues are challenged. With the help of her Hummingbird Activity Specialist, care provider, and iPad, a client was able to shift her focus away from hoarding cats to life-long learning about the animals she loves.
